The shortlist verdict

There is no single best job management software for UK trades. There's a best one for the shape of your business. Per-user tools (Tradify from £34, Powered Now from £28) suit sole traders and lean teams with healthy job volumes; per-job pricing (ServiceM8, unlimited users from £0) suits staff-heavy crews; contract-based systems (Commusoft) suit established firms with six or more staff. This shortlist is desk-assessed: every price checked against the vendor's UK page in July 2026, every limitation stated.

Desk assessed: We checked current UK pricing against official vendor sources, read the official documentation and terms, and weighed public user evidence. No hands-on use yet.

What that doesn't mean: That we've run it on a live job. Day-to-day feel, speed and support quality are reported from user evidence, not our own use.

What earned a place on this list

  • Available and supported in the UK, with verifiable pricing
  • Covers the core loop: quote → schedule → job → invoice → payment
  • Self-serve trial or free tier (so you, and later we, can test it)
  • Real evidence of UK trade usage

ServiceM8 is deliberately not on this axis. It prices by job volume, not headcount: free to £269/month for the whole team, however many people log in. Plotting the two models on one scale would mislead; divide your monthly jobs by your headcount to see which model is priced for you.

Verified monthly price ranges per user: Powered Now £28 to £40; Tradify £34 to £44; Fergus £39 to £45. ServiceM8 uses per-job pricing at £0 to £269 per month for unlimited users.

The shortlist

Tradify

Best starting point for small UK teams

UK price list (£34 to £44/user/month), the full core workflow plus Xero/Sage/QuickBooks on the cheapest plan, and a deep UK trade user base among the tools we assessed. Watch the per-user maths as headcount grows.

From £34 per user/month · 14-day free trial, all features, no credit card required · checked 19 Aug 2026

ServiceM8

Best value for staff-heavy, Apple-equipped teams

Unlimited users on every paid plan and pricing by job volume (£0 to £269/month) makes it dramatically cheaper for crews with modest job counts (the free tier is single-user). Windows/Android offices should trial the browser experience before committing.

From free · 14-day free trial, no credit card required (plus a permanent free tier at 30 jobs/month, single user) · checked 19 Aug 2026

Powered Now

Best for VAT-registered trades wanting UK tax built in

British-built, cheapest per-user entry (£28), MTD compliance on the base plan and VAT return submission from £32. Slimmer integration list: Sage and QuickBooks users should check carefully.

From £28 per user/month · 14-day free trial, no card required · checked 19 Aug 2026

How this shortlist was built

Inclusion criteria: publicly available in the UK; pricing verifiable (in GBP wherever the vendor publishes it); credible evidence of real UK trade usage; and a self-serve trial or free tier so you can verify our findings yourself. We assessed six products against these criteria and shortlisted three, with three more covered honestly below.

This is a desk assessment: verified pricing, official documentation and attributed user evidence, not yet hands-on testing. That's why you won't see scores out of ten here. What you will see is which business shape each tool is priced for, which is the decision that actually matters.

The decision in one paragraph

Divide your monthly jobs by your headcount. High number (busy solo, lean pair): pick a per-user tool: Tradify for ecosystem and integrations, Powered Now if VAT/MTD in-app matters most. Low number (crews, apprentices, office staff): ServiceM8's unlimited users will likely cost a fraction of per-user pricing, if you can live inside the Apple ecosystem. Six or more staff and contracted rollout: talk to Commusoft. Then spend your 14-day trial proving the choice on real jobs.

Also considered, and why they didn't make the shortlist

  • Jobber

Polished product with strong automation, but it bills UK customers in US dollars (roughly Core $21 to Plus $280/month billed annually, plus $29/user; re-checked 22 Jul 2026 after its USD prices moved), so your cost moves with the exchange rate, and UK tax workflows aren't its home ground. Worth a look if marketing automation outweighs those caveats.

  • Fergus

UK price list exists (Essentials £39/Professional £45 per user/month standard, with a heavy promo discounting it when we checked) and cheap timesheet-only seats (£12/month list, £3 on the promo) are clever. Newer to the UK; we'll assess it fully as evidence accumulates.

  • Commusoft

Serious software for established firms, but a 12-month contract, quote-led pricing with no public price list, and a focus on businesses with six or more staff put it outside this shortlist's small-business scope. The right call for larger operations to evaluate directly.

Questions people actually ask

What does job management software cost in the UK?

As of July 2026, verified UK pricing runs from free (ServiceM8's 30-jobs-a-month tier) to roughly £28 to £45 per user/month for the mainstream per-user tools (Powered Now £28 to £40, Tradify £34 to £44, Fergus £39 to £45), or £25 to £269/month flat for ServiceM8's job-volume tiers. Enterprise-style contracts (Commusoft) are quote-led and aimed at firms with six or more staff. All prices ex VAT.

Is there genuinely free job management software?

ServiceM8's free tier is real: 30 job credits a month for a single user, with core quoting/scheduling/invoicing included and no time limit (unlimited users start on the £25 Starter plan). It's the only permanent free tier among the tools we assessed. Everything else offers 14-day trials.

Which job management software handles UK VAT and CIS best?

Of the tools we've desk-assessed, Powered Now publicly documents Making Tax Digital VAT submission in its published plans (£32 tier and up); the others don't list it. Tradify sells UK-localised plans with accounting integrations from £34. ServiceM8 and Jobber are capable products but UK tax handling isn't their home ground, so test your specific VAT/CIS workflow on trial before committing.
