FreeAgent documents CIS for both sides: contractors can record subcontractor bills/deductions and generate the figures needed for a CIS300 return, and subcontractors can record CIS invoices and income. It explicitly does not file the monthly CIS300 return itself, that has to be done externally via HMRC's CIS online service using FreeAgent's own figures, and CIS support does not extend to partnership or unincorporated landlord account types (source: FreeAgent's own support documentation, checked 2026-08-21, support.freeagent.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115001224164 and support.freeagent.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115001219730).

CIS capability varies by exactly which QuickBooks product and tier, verified against three of QuickBooks' own primary sources (2026-08-21), kept deliberately separate rather than described as one blanket "CIS support" claim. Contractor CIS300 filing: confirmed direct e-filing to HMRC, described twice on QuickBooks' own CIS product page as available "at no extra cost," and confirmed by the "File a CIS return in QuickBooks" how-to article, which is tagged as applying to Simple Start, Essentials and Plus specifically (not confirmed for Sole Trader Plus or Advanced, despite the separate pricing page's checkmark grid showing CIS on every tier). Subcontractor recording: also confirmed on Simple Start/Essentials/Plus via the same sources. QuickBooks Sole Trader (the product/mode behind the cheapest tier) is different: a third primary source ("Setting up CIS payments and returns in QuickBooks") states plainly that "the CIS feature in QuickBooks Sole Trader is specifically tailored for subcontractors" - i.e. subcontractor-only, with no stated contractor-side CIS300 filing capability, and it is not confirmed whether this "QuickBooks Sole Trader" naming is the identical product behind the pricing page's "Sole Trader Plus" tier or a related-but-distinct one; treat that as unverified rather than assumed identical. CIS calculation/deduction tracking is confirmed wherever CIS itself is confirmed above. Payroll dependency: the CIS filing screens live inside the app's "Payroll" navigation menu, which is a UI location, not evidence that the separate paid QuickBooks Online Payroll product must be purchased - running payroll itself (payslips, pension contributions) remains a distinct paid product, but is not a precondition for CIS300 filing on the confirmed tiers.

Sage Accounting
Sage Group plcACCOfficial-source checked, full record pendingVerdict not yet issued£20 to £59/moPer business/mo30-day free trial, or the introductory discount above instead of a trialchecked
Platforms: Not yet verified
Manage and submit CIS is checked on all three tiers on Sage's own plan comparison table, and Sage's own help documentation (gb-kb.sage.com) confirms this includes filing the CIS300 return directly to HMRC from inside the product, using the user's own HMRC credentials entered at the point of submission; this is a real, verified point of difference from FreeAgent, which explicitly does not file CIS300 directly. Sage's page markets MTD readiness through VAT-specific features ("Calculate and submit VAT", "Assisted VAT submissions"); no page text independently confirms MTD for Income Tax (the sole-trader/landlord scheme with 2026-2028 thresholds) specifically, so treat that as unverified rather than assumed included. No explicit statement was found either confirming or excluding partnership or limited-company account types.

Xero's own pricing page states UK subscription prices are increasing from 1 September 2026: Ignite to £18, Grow to £39, Comprehensive to £55 and Ultimate to £70, all ex VAT (announced increase independently confirmed). Recheck against the vendor's page after that date and update the tiers above; when the price-history/snapshot system is built, this known future price is a ready-made first test case rather than something to just overwrite this entry's dateChecked with later.
