ServiceM8 review UK: per-job pricing, Android and the real limits

The verdict

ServiceM8's pricing model is its verdict: every paid plan allows unlimited users (the free tier is single-user), and you pay for job volume instead, from a genuinely free 30-jobs-a-month tier to £269/month for 1,500+ jobs (ex VAT, re-checked 19 September 2026). For a five-person crew doing 40 jobs a month, that's £25/month against £170+ on per-user rivals. Device fit is no longer a simple 'Apple catch': ServiceM8's newer Help Centre says Android now offers almost all iOS functionality, while current UK pricing/marketing pages and an older Android article still describe a narrower Apple-first / Lite experience. We have not independently tested the Android app, so we treat that source conflict as a trial check, not a verdict. This is a desk assessment supported by our fictional-data quote-to-invoice workflow; we have not run live jobs through it.

Best for
Teams where headcount is high relative to job count, businesses that can prove their exact mobile workflow on the trial, and anyone who wants to start on a real free tier
Not for
High-job-volume operations where per-job credits and SMS overages erase the pricing advantage, or teams that need a specific advanced Android feature they have not verified during the trial
UK price
£25 to £269 per month · 50 job credits
Trial
14-day free trial, no credit card required (plus a permanent free tier at 30 jobs/month, single user)

Desk assessed: We checked current UK pricing against official vendor sources, read the official documentation and terms, and weighed public user evidence. Some records also include clearly bounded trial spot-checks, but not enough first-hand workflow evidence to earn the Trial account used level.

What that doesn't mean: That we've run the product on live customer work over time. Long-term reliability, mobile field use and support quality stay unverified unless the record says otherwise.

The pricing model is the story

Almost every job management tool charges per user: more staff, bigger bill. ServiceM8 inverts it. Every paid plan allows unlimited users (the free tier is single-user), and what you buy is a monthly allowance of 'job credits': 30 free, 50 for £25, 150 for £59, 500 for £119, 1,500+ for £269 (ex VAT, re-checked 19 September 2026).

Worked example: a gas firm with five field engineers and an office manager doing about 40 jobs a month pays £25/month on Starter. The same headcount on a per-user rival at £34 to £45/user runs £204 to £270/month. That's not a marginal saving; it's an order of magnitude.

Now reverse it: a one-person maintenance operation doing 150 small jobs a month pays £59 here, versus £34 flat on Tradify Lite. The model rewards staff-heavy, job-light businesses and punishes the opposite. Do the division on your own numbers before you decide anything.

How it measures up

Ratings at this evidence level are tied to checkable facts. Where we can't verify something without hands-on use, it says unverified rather than guessing. Numeric scores publish only after hands-on testing: how we test.

Pricing transparency
Strong

Full UK GBP price list published ex VAT, including overage rates (15p/job on the top tier, 5p/SMS), which is rare clarity on the edge costs.

Value for money
Strong

Unlimited users on every paid tier inverts the industry's per-seat model; the free tier covers 30 jobs/month for a single user, indefinitely.

Pricing model fit
Adequate

Brilliant when staff outnumber jobs; the maths flips for high-volume solo operators, where 150 jobs/month costs £59 here versus a flat per-user fee elsewhere.

Platform coverage
Adequate

Native iOS and Android apps now exist. Newer ServiceM8 Help Centre FAQs say Android offers almost all iOS functionality, but current UK marketing/pricing pages and an older Android article still describe a narrower Lite experience. We have not tested Android, so exact advanced-feature parity remains unverified.

UK tax fit
Adequate

UK site and GBP pricing exist, but it's an Australian product; UK reviewers note VAT/CIS handling needs workarounds compared with British-built rivals. Verify your VAT workflow on trial.

Quoting & invoicing
Strong

Quoting, invoicing and scheduling included from the free tier per the published plan matrix. Confirmed in our own trial: building a quote, accepting it into a Work Order and marking the job Completed auto-generated an invoice from the same line items with no re-entry.

Mobile usability
Unverified

Widely praised as a field app, but we haven't run jobs through it, so it's unrated until we have.

Support quality
Unverified

Not yet tested first-hand.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Unlimited users on every paid plan, so you add apprentices, subbies and office staff at zero marginal cost
  • A real free tier (30 jobs/month, single user), not a time-limited trial, so you can run a quiet month for nothing
  • Overage pricing is published (15p/job top tier, 5p/SMS), so the edge cases are budgetable
  • Job-credit model means quiet winters cost less than busy summers if you move tiers
  • One job record carries the quote through to the invoice: accepting a quote and marking the job Completed generated the invoice automatically from the same line items, with nothing to re-key

Weaknesses

  • ServiceM8's official Android documentation currently conflicts: newer Help Centre FAQs describe near-parity with iOS, while UK marketing/pricing pages and an older Android article still describe a narrower Apple-first / Lite experience
  • Australian origin shows in UK tax handling, so expect workarounds for VAT/CIS compared with UK-built tools
  • Job credits don't roll over; a quiet month's unused credits are gone
  • High-volume solo traders can end up paying more than on per-user rivals

Android is now a source-conflict check, not an automatic dealbreaker

ServiceM8's platform story changed again in September 2026. Newer Help Centre FAQs say the native Android app offers almost all the same functionality as iOS, naming schedules, client job history, payments and deposits, document scanning, photo annotation, staff messages, Proposals and Asset workflows. That materially weakens the old 'Android is only for basic field tasks' objection.

But ServiceM8's own current documentation is not fully reconciled. Its UK homepage/pricing copy and an older Android help article still describe an Apple-optimised product, call the Android app ServiceM8 Lite and recommend iPhones for the fullest experience. Because those are all first-party ServiceM8 sources, TBV will not silently pick whichever version makes a cleaner verdict. We have not tested the current Android build ourselves. If Android matters to your team, use the trial to test the exact management, payment, history, forms, scanning and advanced mobile functions you depend on.

UK fit, honestly

ServiceM8 publishes a proper UK price list ex VAT, better pricing localisation than some bigger rivals. But it's an Australian product best known in Australia and New Zealand, and UK-focused reviewers consistently note that VAT edge cases and CIS handling take workarounds that British-built software does natively. If you're CIS-registered, put your exact deduction workflow through the trial before you commit.

A trial workflow: quote to invoice

We completed a trial workflow inside a genuine ServiceM8 trial account on 28 July 2026, working through a single fictional scenario: a fictional fencing customer, a fictional fence-repair job, never a real name, address or contact detail. Browser automation was used to operate parts of the interface, and Jake reviewed and confirmed the completed workflow, evidence and written conclusions afterwards. This does not change the review's desk-assessed evidence level.

We created the fictional customer, opened a job against them, and built a quote for a fence panel and post replacement: one line item, £450.00 total including VAT. Accepting the quote flipped the job straight to Work Order status with no separate confirmation step. Marking the job Completed then generated an invoice automatically from the same line item (£450.00 total, £0.00 paid, £450.00 balance due) with nothing to re-enter. The fictional job then appeared correctly in the main Jobs list alongside the account's pre-existing sample job.

One thing worth flagging honestly: in our July browser session, Print Quote and Print Invoice did not produce a visible document. No new tab, popup or download appeared, so the evidence below shows the Billing tab's own saved data instead of a generated PDF. ServiceM8 support clarified on 21 September 2026 that the expected Chrome flow is a PDF or browser print-preview view and suggested checking Chrome's PDF setting ('Open PDFs in Chrome') if nothing appears. ServiceM8's public help also documents generated quote and invoice PDFs. We have not yet reproduced the print preview ourselves, so the July result is a session-specific Chrome/testing caveat rather than a confirmed ServiceM8 fault.

We also checked the account itself: signing up put us on a time-based 14-day full-feature trial with no payment card requested, not directly on the permanent 30-jobs/month Free plan advertised on the pricing page. There's no job-credit counter on this trial type, because job credits are a Free-plan mechanic, not a trial one.

One question from that first session stayed open: what happens to a trial account's data once the 14 days end. We can now answer it. The trial expired on 11 August 2026, and we asked ServiceM8 support directly whether an existing trial could be extended for genuine editorial testing rather than restarted fresh. Support extended it on 11 September 2026, now running to 25 September 2026, and the fictional job, quote and invoice from the original 28 July session were still there afterwards, unchanged. Trial data survived an expiry-and-extension cycle intact, at least in this case.

What we haven't verified yet

Desk assessment: pricing, plan contents and overage rates verified against ServiceM8's UK pricing page; platform evidence re-checked 29 September 2026 across ServiceM8's newer Android FAQs and its still-live Apple-first/Lite marketing/help copy; booking-confirmation and exit findings from ServiceM8's own help material plus a 21 September support clarification; tax-fit findings from attributed public user evidence; and one completed fictional-data trial workflow (above) covering the quote-to-invoice loop on the web app, with a follow-up check confirming trial data survives an expiry-and-extension cycle. We have not run real jobs through it, tested the current native iOS/Android apps side by side, reproduced the PDF/print-preview flow, exercised booking confirmations, tried the data exports or account backup, tested cancellation, or tested support responsiveness under load. Sustained real-job use is what would earn this review a numeric score.

Watch out for

  • Count your real monthly job volume before choosing a tier, because the right ServiceM8 plan depends on jobs, not people, and unused credits expire monthly.

  • Customer booking confirmations are not sent merely because a job is scheduled. ServiceM8's current help and support say the Booking Confirmation automation must be enabled and 'Send Booking Confirmation' selected in the booking flow; once selected, that choice is remembered for later bookings until switched off. Dragging a job onto the Schedule or Calendar does not trigger a booking confirmation. We have not tested this first-hand.

  • If your field staff carry Android, put the exact tasks you need through the Android app on the trial. ServiceM8's newer Help Centre says Android now covers almost all iOS functionality, but other current vendor pages still carry older Lite/Apple-first wording. We have not independently tested Android, so do not assume either full parity or the old restricted feature set.

  • Prices re-checked 19 September 2026 (unchanged since 13 July 2026), ex VAT, on ServiceM8's UK pricing page, so reconfirm before subscribing.

  • Know how you'd leave before you rely on it. ServiceM8's help says cancelling an account removes all its data, irrecoverably. The Job List and Client List CSV exports need the Advanced Reporting Pack add-on and are text-only reports that don't include files such as PDFs, photos or videos. Its help centre also describes a separate self-serve account backup, for reference only (it can't be imported into another ServiceM8 account). We haven't tested exports, the backup or cancellation, so check what you'd actually get during the trial.

  • Signing up put us on a time-limited 14-day full-feature trial, not directly on the permanent 30-jobs/month Free plan; no payment card was requested to start it. Confirm what happens to your account and data at the end of the 14 days before you rely on the trial for anything real.

  • Our July Chrome session did not show a document after Print Quote or Print Invoice. ServiceM8 support clarified on 21 September 2026 that the expected web flow is a PDF/browser print-preview view and suggested Chrome's 'Open PDFs in Chrome' setting when nothing appears. We have not yet reproduced that preview ourselves, so the earlier result remains a session-specific Chrome/testing caveat, not a product limitation.

Final word · BV-R-002

ServiceM8 is the value verdict of this category for one specific shape of business: staff-heavy, with modest monthly job counts, where its per-job pricing can be hard to beat in pounds. Device fit is no longer a clean Apple-versus-Android decision because ServiceM8's newer Android FAQs and older live Apple-first documentation currently conflict. Do the per-job arithmetic honestly, then make the trial prove the exact mobile workflow your team needs.
